Here are a couple of quick sketches done out in the street with a little bit of watercolour put on later.

It’s lovely getting to draw people when they’re not looking. I’m actually very shy of doing this very often. I know it’s important to practise but I’d hate people to feel embarrassed about it. And I really don’t want to seem creepy. And I’m a woman! I can imagine it being more fraught for men who want to draw kids out in public. There have been a few times that I’ve gone out to parks and needed to get reference pictures of children playing. I don’t want to do the telephoto lens from the bushes thing, so I’ve actually taken business cards and talked to the parents there to see if they mind. I know I should be able to photograph people in public and not worry. But it’s really about being sympathetic to people. I’d be interested to know what kind of experiences people have had with this. Often I just use Google images, and waste hours trawling for the right angles!

I’m following a white rabbit right now. It’s having a rest in a cafe to my right and is flying in a balloon on my left. That often happens – an idea or a subject likes to get out in multiple formats for a while until I know it well and know how best to deal with it. I have rabbits on the brain today. The paper wasn’t good for watercolours so I wasn’t able to go for some of the splatty colour I would have liked. I think the page would have disintegrated. You can see how it was getting roughed up just by a simple stroke beneath the writing (which has gone spiky over the blue). I love working with a stylus – especially the dipping-it-in-ink bit.

Drawn/painted/inked on eh-hem Tuesday 31st August 2010, masquerading as a Monday. That’s what happens when I go out on a Monday night and have fun!

I had a hankering for some watercolour tonight.

Drawn in the studio at 10.30pm on Monday March 29, 2010.

He has a lean and hungry look. I feel that I should draw what he’s so focused upon… only I don’t know what it should be. We’ve had lots of grasshoppers around lately… maybe one of those could sneak in.

It’s odd I know! I think they may have been driven toward the city by the smoke of the fires lately. I can just imagine them, a whirring cloud slipping and billowing on the wind, confused as they come to rest finally on hot suburban roads.

The birds must have had a merry and unexpected feast! And perhaps… some foxes did too?

How brilliant are these artists? I taught a cat-drawing workshop at the East Melbourne Library yesterday – we had so much fun. Here are some of the wonderful creations by the kids, a great group of 12, playing with watercolour and pencils. Have a look at these beauties!

I’m having them printed tomorrow so, fingers crossed, they should be ready for the market on Sunday (at the Convent).

I don’t know his story yet. But he certainly seems to have one…
