The word is spreading about the exhibition… (I’m colour-coding in my excitement).

“Inpress” have an article by Tony McMahon about the show out now - it’s a free street mag that you’ll find around the city. It’s really good too – a lot of depth and thought into what the show is trying to do. Excellent
And the postcards are Everywhere. Click to send one by email!
And I might be in MX on Monday!
And in The Age’s EG on Friday, advertising the Family Day in things to do on the weekend.

And that would be because it’s all happening on Thursday and beyond. Next week. NEXT WEEK . (That em-phA-sis was for me… can’t quite believe there aren’t still weeks to go…)

But first, there is a market tomorrow at the Convent. Find me in my usual spot inside, past the lovely big tree in the courtyard. Hmm. Japanese for lunch I think, and I’ll be finishing the lady in the tree painting. Me? Still painting things that will be in the exhibition? (Shuffles and looks past your shoulder. ‘What’s that?’ Then disappears.)

See you soon!

There’s been a lot happening. Last weekend I was in Sydney for the Australian Society of Authors AGM, the awarding of the Barbara Jefferis Award to Kristina Olsson for her book The China Garden by (UQP) and first meeting of the committee of management for the year. We have a great group of dynamic people and a lot of experience. Don’t forget that you can contact me with ideas, questions and concerns throughout the year. I’ll do what I can to answer or assist! And if you’re an Australian author, illustrator or someone interested in the industry, you should have a look through our website which is full of very useful stuff on rates, contracts, industry news and tips.

The illustrations are in, the judges have met and now it is time for the people to vote! Hop onto the Koko Black site to vote for your favourites in the Easter Drawing Prize.

You may win something delicious yourself!

As for comings-ups, there is a market this weekend on Sunday at the Abbotsford Convent. Outside will be the gorgeous Shirts & Skirts market and inside will be the magnifique Maker’s Market via the big-tree courtyard. We’ll have beautiful things to see, good things to eat and the near-by Children’s Farm will provide nose-to-nose time with some of our furrier friends. Don’t worry if it looks rainy – the Maker’s Market is under-cover.

Well if you’re in Melbourne you’ve suffered through another hot and sticky week but all is mended this weekend. The weather is gentle, the skies clear and there’s a market on tomorrow at the Convent, if you feel so inclined.

I’ve had a big week of work up in my hot studio. On Thursday I created a font for the first time. I hope it works. And, joy and rapture, I finished a picture book. It’s a sweet book about a family and their love for wearing their gumboots all through the seasons of the year. Or perhaps a coded treatise on post-sandalian hedonism… but probably not. It’s called “My Boots In Season” written by Kerryn Pascoe and will be published by Windy Hollow Books later this year. I thought it was done so many times over but I kept finding little things I wanted to fix – like looking at one of my characters and suddenly finding I’d created a mini-he. He was only two-thirds the size he was supposed to be! This is why it is good to have a little time to look back over a book before handing it in. It’s amazing the things I can not notice until all the pages are before me and I can compare heights, clothes, hair lengths, colours…

I’ve been using the light box too and so have been completely ringed by things – sitting in a nest of tables, tea trolleys spilling over with roughs and reference, A3 sheets, watercolour pans, inkpots, and pots of pens and brushes. And in the hot room, with an old rattly fan struggling to move the air about and making the papers flap and dance… from above it would have seemed that a strangely artistic twister was slowly devouring the room.

But now the book is done, and I am slowly allowing everything to sidle back into their right places. And I can move again.

I can’t wait to get out to the market and do some big painting on Sunday.

So I’ve relocated downstairs to paint. One day I’ll have a nice air conditioner or at least well-paid polar bears waving ice cubes, but until then, there are some days you just don’t want to be up here. Tin roof and me caught between the sun and the hot air rising…

There were people up here on the weekend, in fact quite a few people – for on Saturday I had my first ever Open Studio for the neighbours. It was a great dry-run for my exhibition next year. Sorting through my traditional paintings, swapping frames, hanging, working out prices… Don’t worry, my animal series wasn’t for sale – all of those bears and rabbits, dogs and cats, lions in smoking jackets and their friends are still safely prowling the studio awaiting their own opening.

Other than that – the Maker’s Market on Sunday was lovely and I’m really enjoying our new digs. The light and space is great. The Convent is gorgeous right now – the gardens are still green, the new gallery and shop are open (fantastic renovation of our old room) and there’s a cute new little Japanese restaurant that’s opened up between the Bakery bar and Lentils. Mmm.

So today… John Lee Hooker, some sweet jazz to follow, and three canvasses on the go (the tiger, the rabbit and the dog cafe scene). It’s one of the days when my work just doesn’t sound like work. You know? About time!

Both will be lovely. At both I will be painting. At both there will be loads of goodies. Perhaps pirates, perhaps bullion. One never knows. Hopefully a parrot at the very least. Feel free to bring your own.

SHORT COURSE: My Short Course in writing for children at RMIT (city campus) is coming up so for anyone who’s been thinking about joining us you’d better get in soon! Places are limited to 15 and are filling up nicely. The course runs for 6 weeks and starts on Wednesday July 15. Classes are once a week 6-9pm every Wednesday. With a particular focus on picture books we’ll be looking at getting work to a publishable level – whether or not you go for that final step is up to you. The process of refining stories, thinking about format and audience will be a benefit to any writer, regardless.

EXHIBITION: To my great disappointment it looks like the exhibition will be next year now. It is probably for the best – more time to create the last few special works, book in to the best possible gallery space and do everything properly. I’ll also be working on a fun series for the Christmas markets – so stay tuned.

My EPIC is progressing well. I had a very successful day of writing today For a textless work, there sure is a lot of planning and writing preparation going on.

MARKETS: I’ll be in Sydney this weekend for ASA meetings so Pete will be manning the stall at Sunday Arts at the Convent. The full range of work will be there as usual – just without me. I’ll miss being there very much – I love these markets! If you need signed books, don’t worry, I’ll be creating a book plate that I can sign and write a message on, which can be posted out to anyone that missed it. Just let me know if you need one.

Now, it’s back to work assembling prints!
xx
