Koko black drawing prize – is here again!

It’s that time again everyone! Sharpen your pencils, whittle your quills and ink up your squids… This drawing prize is not to be missed!

Entries close on march 4.

Entries are open now, the template is on their website and there are two divisions to choose from… The Junior Award (for artists under 12) and the Judges Prize. And don’t forget the peoples’ choice award to be determined by the general public who vote for their favourite Top 20 artwork when displayed along the Royal Arcade, Melbourne. The prizes are fantastic – the top prize being $2500 towards art expenses, a years supply of chocolate (yes you heard right!), and galley membership of your choice… So give it a go

And the best news for me is that I have the huge pleasure of being a judge once again.

Hello dear friends. We’re hitting that festive time of the year again and I have been hard at work creating all manner of things to share with you. We have also revamped the online shop and honestly I’m still riding high on the excitement of the Strangely Familiar show earlier this year. To celebrate and to thank you all for your support, I am giving away three big exciting prizes. To be in the running, simply create an account at the shop before midnight Saturday 11th December. No need to buy anything!

Prizes will be drawn on Sunday December 12th and posted out the following week. Good luck!

Of course I’ll also be out and about at a range of gorgeous markets from now until Christmas. There has been a lot of new work this year: a brand new paperback edition of The Night Garden with those endpapers that the kids all love, a sweet hardback My Boots in Season, some new cards including a new range which featured in Liberty of London for fashion week, a limited edition etching and more. Markets are always a wonderful way of finding something a little bit different for the people we love.

And for other news? After the excitement of the solo show earlier this year, I’m beginning to work toward the next one. If you missed it or would like to revisit the paintings or buy one of the few remaining, it’s all on the exhibition website. Next year things will slow down a little as, well, we’re expecting twin boys in January! But Peter will be continuing the markets and just you try to stop me drawing and painting!

Koko Black artists

Thursday was the announcement of the winners of the 2010 Koko Black Easter Creative Drawing Prize. It was a beautiful day that celebrated the drawing talents of some amazing artists – young and old. Well, none actually very old at all They came from interstate, and all around Victoria. There were stories of someone sleeping with the invite under her pillow for weeks, and others that came at great personal expense. It was a genuinely joyous occasion.

I am so very impressed with this prize and particularly the opportunity it gives artists to pursue their dreams. Not just with the support of money and chocolate and the inspiration of gallery membership – but the confidence gained from recognition by their peers and the public that what they love to do is worthwhile. And that they should continue to do it. While some were practising illustrators and designers, others were simply people with a passion for drawing. It was truly inspiring to see everyone’s work – especially the work of the kids, many of whom were drawing at an adult level.

The entrants responded to a template drawn by the talented Michael Lindell.

And so without further ado…

Huge congratulations to all the winners and to the finalists (you can still see their work in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne and on Koko Black’s website). The quality was sensational – so much drawing talent, imagination and wit. It was a huge challenge for us to choose the winners, but a very pleasurable one. I can’t wait to see what people submit next year! I hope you all enter.

KOKO Black 2010 Creative Drawing Prize

There is still time to get your entries in for the KOKO BLACK drawing prize.

Yes, a drawing prize created and supported by the delicious team at KOKO BLACK, chocolatiers extraordinaire.

Pop onto their website quick-smart and download the entry form and drawing template, or pick one up in person from any KOKO BLACK shop. Drawings must be on A3 paper, so if you’re printing out the template you’ll need access to an A3 printer. Entrants must reside in Australia.

Who, or what is emerging from the giant burrow? It’s up to you to draw it!

You have till Friday 5th March when entries close.

Prizes vary depending on your age but include such things as a fund toward art education/supplies, membership of the NGV, and naturally, their oh so fine chocolate. So give it a go. Why am I posting about this? Because I am one of the judges for this year’s prize and I can’t wait to see all of the incredible drawings.

Dandenong Festival of art for youth – quick!

Starting out as a young artist is a hard thing. As well as teaching yourself how to paint and draw you have to be able to lay your hands on materials. I was always lucky because I could nick my mum’s old tubes of paint and use her brushes. I hate to think how much of her stuff I used and probably ruined! As I got older I wanted to try to actually sell pieces, so I was also having to afford the costs of framing. Pretty difficult on pocket money.

Then I heard about some art competitions for young artists and I started entering them. While quite a few of the Rotary art shows have young artist awards, the best by far was the Dandenong Festival of Music and Art for Youth which was only for us and had a whole range of awards. The prizes ranged from fairly small to a respectable $600, but the categories were a challenge – drawing, painting, photography, portraits… with different sections for different age groups. Winning prizes was wonderful, but motivating myself to actually complete, frame and submit the work in the first place was a tremendous exercise and really made me try hard. It feels brilliant to win an award. It feels like being a proper artist to receive money and to see your work hanging in a gallery.

If you’re a young artist I really recommend looking up youth art awards to see what is out there. This is the final year of the Dandenong Festival for now so don’t miss this opportunity.
