I was trawling through photos of our cat (and others) this evening on my return from Uni. Partly because I wanted to see what reference shots I had of our feline friends, and partly looking for inspiration for a Mondoodle. And so I came across one of our cat, taken through a window, after he had accidentally gotten himself locked on the wrong side of a door. Which is totally unheard of in the pet world. ‘What?’ You say. A pet that manages to rush unerringly to the least sensible side of a door? Simply because it opened? Never.

And yet it happened. And the look of dismay was so good that instead of rushing to let him in, we rushed for the camera. Which might, just might, make us bad people. We let him in after that. I’ve shifted the context to a rainy puddle-strewn day and a ever-shrinking rock. Just because it makes for a little jeopardy.

After three days alternating between couch and bed I’m feeling much better, if not sounding it! I don’t think I’m patient enough to ever get a long-term illness. I was sorry to miss the market and to not get out into the sun today. Winter can have some amazing weather and I saw it all from my window – hail and cold one minute then bright sunlight the next. Or perhaps that’s just Melbourne.

Here’s a true story, interpreted nicely. As you know our poor old cat died a couple of months ago. He was an excellent mouser, so good that we started calling him just that. Mouser. He would watch a hole for weeks, stalk sounds in the walls and proved his mousing prowess on many an occasion. We could never be cross about it – in fact we were glad that if he ever got lost he would be able to feed himself naturally. He was a cat, after all.

When Mouser went to the great mouse-filled hills in the sky, we started to notice the balance tipping. And then this happened…

Of all the things to choose in the house and larder, they only wanted to eat the cat food. Mice with a sense of humour and justice. When they started being spotted on the kitchen counter however, well.. Let’s end the story there, shall we?

Mondoodle drawn in the lounge, on the couch (where else?) at 8pm, Monday August 2, 2010.

The boys do it too, I’m happy to say. I have yet to see a goth couple’s kid but I would hope they’d have access to even more outlandish garb. Brilliant! Reminds me of parties in my uni days. I miss fancy dress. When I see what my gorgeous niece Chloe gets to wear I’m so jealous.

Here’s one I made earlier. Well, in the last hour. I’d love to hear about the most outlandish assemblage you’ve ever seen or worn.

Draw in the lounge, 11pm on Monday 1st February, 2010.

The stripy socks are my favourite. I have so many and nowhere to wear them…

The downloads page on my website is updated now. So, all the links should be working for you to get the colouring-in sheets and The Night Garden word jumble (there’s an answer sheet too).

And there’s a new thing…

I know how hard it is to draw a character over and over again in the same story, so I’ve put together a sheet of images of Strange, the cat from The Night Garden. So kids, how about you make your own stories about Strange? What adventures will you give him? What backgrounds will you come up with? Simply save the page to your computer, print it out, then cut and paste him into your own book. Maybe you’ll make your own front cover for the book? Don’t forget your teacher may be able to use a photocopier to make the pictures bigger or smaller.

And if you do use them I’d love to see your books! Maybe we can make a gallery of some of your favourite pages. Keep in touch

What a market on the 7th! I sold some oils then had a brainwave when I got home… So now I’ve painted some new pieces especially for the cat-lovers out there…
[Gallery not found]
Ivanhoe yesterday was a bit quiet. That was my swan-song. (ooh – where does that come from? …I think I remember something about swans singing as they die…) Anyway – I won’t be at that market again. I’ve met some nice people and I’ve given it more than a year but it’s not right for me. It’s been interesting to look at the different dynamics of the two locations. For some reason I just fit better at the Convent. Does that mean something? The Children’s Farm probably brings the families, but the crowd is just generally more my style. I really respect Jenny who runs Sunday Arts at the Convent (on the 1st Sunday each month). She hates it being called a market and all that the term conjures. I can understand that, although the set-up is market-like in the best possible way. Yesterday at Ivanhoe I looked around and really felt like I was at a church fete – the music, the crafts – something about it made everyone there look like they were indulging in a hobby. The right atmosphere and mix of people is so important. Despite the aim of being an art market (named after the Heidelberg painters) – it seems you just can’t put Olde-crafts and modern artists next to each other and have it look right. Jenny’s event, while having struggled at times, has kept its authenticity and I really appreciate it. It works beautifully.

I’m back to the Convent next Sunday for the Maker’s Market. It’s a mixed bag of artisans and there’s a lot of very fine work there, then add the Shirts & Skirts market outside as well… it makes for a good day!

I remember growing up loving Norman Lindsay’s cat illustrations. I never had a copy of them myself but would look at them when I visited my Grandpa’s house. They were all just black line work – not sure it they were pen or etchings. So expressive! Now that I have a cat of my own… I can’t help drawing them too.

So here are two cats. The inspiration for the bottom one definitely came from our dear moggy – as scratchy, bitey, shredding and cross as ever a cat could be. Of course he’s curled up on my lap being cute now… but he can’t fool me!
