And that would be because it’s all happening on Thursday and beyond. Next week. NEXT WEEK . (That em-phA-sis was for me… can’t quite believe there aren’t still weeks to go…)

But first, there is a market tomorrow at the Convent. Find me in my usual spot inside, past the lovely big tree in the courtyard. Hmm. Japanese for lunch I think, and I’ll be finishing the lady in the tree painting. Me? Still painting things that will be in the exhibition? (Shuffles and looks past your shoulder. ‘What’s that?’ Then disappears.)

Stonnington Council, with NEEF (the National Employment and Education Foundation), want kids to devour books as well as their fruit & veg. Mark Wilson, Elise Hurst & Kevin Burgemeestre will create an open artists’ studio on the Market stage to show sculptures, drawings and paintings; read from their books; and hand out signed copies of their books to some lucky winners.

Didn’t guess that one did you? The next is a little more predictable…

Sunday May 2nd at the gorgeous Abbotsford Convent from 10-4pm in the Community Rooms via the big-tree courtyard. Perfect place to mooch, graze and variously chillax.

At both I’ll be painting, selling and sporting newly-reddened hair. That last bit may only be of interest to me! But you’ll find me easily…

Introducing  TWO NEW PRINTS coming out ino the big wide world for the first time this weekend at the Sister’s Market in Brunswick and the Maker’s Market at the Abbotsford Convent. It looks like a stunning weekend (if it’s anything like today) so come and say hello to my new adventuring girls.

Come along to our lovely arts market at the Abbotsford Convent (inside the Community room off the main treed-courtyard). There’s the Collingwood children’s farm across the road, there are lovely places for breakfast, lunch and all the in-betweens. And I believe there is a new market outside in the grounds – the Finder’s Market for all sorts of collectible odds and ends.

Kristina Olsson, Angelo Loukakis, Rosalind Hinde

There’s been a lot happening. Last weekend I was in Sydney for the Australian Society of Authors AGM, the awarding of the Barbara Jefferis Award to Kristina Olsson for her book The China Garden by (UQP) and first meeting of the committee of management for the year. We have a great group of dynamic people and a lot of experience. Don’t forget that you can contact me with ideas, questions and concerns throughout the year. I’ll do what I can to answer or assist! And if you’re an Australian author, illustrator or someone interested in the industry, you should have a look through our website which is full of very useful stuff on rates, contracts, industry news and tips.

The illustrations are in, the judges have met and now it is time for the people to vote! Hop onto the Koko Black site to vote for your favourites in the Easter Drawing Prize.

As for comings-ups, there is a market this weekend on Sunday at the Abbotsford Convent. Outside will be the gorgeous Shirts & Skirts market and inside will be the magnifique Maker’s Market via the big-tree courtyard. We’ll have beautiful things to see, good things to eat and the near-by Children’s Farm will provide nose-to-nose time with some of our furrier friends. Don’t worry if it looks rainy – the Maker’s Market is under-cover.

If you’ve never visited, you should come along. If you have already then you know this is always a good one. Don’t be put off by the scaffolding outside for all is quite normal within. I wonder what I should paint??

I’ve had a big week of work up in my hot studio. On Thursday I created a font for the first time. I hope it works. And, joy and rapture, I finished a picture book. It’s a sweet book about a family and their love for wearing their gumboots all through the seasons of the year. Or perhaps a coded treatise on post-sandalian hedonism… but probably not. It’s called “My Boots In Season” written by Kerryn Pascoe and will be published by Windy Hollow Books later this year. I thought it was done so many times over but I kept finding little things I wanted to fix – like looking at one of my characters and suddenly finding I’d created a mini-he. He was only two-thirds the size he was supposed to be! This is why it is good to have a little time to look back over a book before handing it in. It’s amazing the things I can not notice until all the pages are before me and I can compare heights, clothes, hair lengths, colours…

I’ve been using the light box too and so have been completely ringed by things – sitting in a nest of tables, tea trolleys spilling over with roughs and reference, A3 sheets, watercolour pans, inkpots, and pots of pens and brushes. And in the hot room, with an old rattly fan struggling to move the air about and making the papers flap and dance… from above it would have seemed that a strangely artistic twister was slowly devouring the room.

But now the book is done, and I am slowly allowing everything to sidle back into their right places. And I can move again.

I can’t wait to get out to the market and do some big painting on Sunday.

Outside there’s a Farmer’s Market (entry $2) and inside, via the main courtyard to the right is the Arts Market. I’ll bring along some paintings, prints, cards and there will be excellent stocking-filler opportunities as well as significant gifts. If you’re off work already, just come for a wander. The weather will be perfect! For dinner or a celebratory drink there’s the Bakery, Lentil as Anything, the new Japanese restaurant and Handsome Steve’s.

In other news, the Sunday Arts at the Convent special twilight market on the 23 December is to be the last ever for this market, so we’re going to make it a doosie! We’ll be teaming up with a delicious farmer’s market that afternoon.

Both of these markets are inside so there will be no hassles about the weather, whatever it is. Hope to see you there!
