As an illustrator and author of picture books I am
in a fairly unusual position of being able to talk about the whole process
from first ideas to final illustrations. School visit bookings can be
made directly with me.
| Possible
programs |
| Talk |
"Creating a Picture Book" The process of creating a
picture book from first ideas to finished product. Talks also
to students and adults wanting to get into illustration about
my experiences in infiltrating this industry. |
| Talk
& Demonstration |
"Picture
books and characters" This 50-60 min session deals with
the process of creating a picture book and includes a demonstration
where I create a character. |
| Demonstrations |
Informal
demonstrations are a great way of engaging people at festivals,
talking to little groups and passers-by. Set up at a table, I
discuss my work and answer questions while working on an illustration.

| Book
Signings |
I
am happy to sign books when coming to schools and festivals. If
at a school, I find it is helpful to let people know ahead of
time that books will be for sale.

| Guidelines
for author visits |
A good
indication of the expectations and guidelines for an author/illustrator
visit is at the Children's
Book Council of Australia web site. Below are some specific
considerations.
|
| Group
size |
I prefer
small groups of around 20 - 30 as much of my material is visual
and larger groups will be at a disadvantage. Big groups are possible
- contact me to discuss how it would work. |
| Materials |
Large easel, a table and a drop-sheet/newspapers (Talk + Demonstration).
Table and chair (signings, small group demonstrations). Data projector
for larger group talks. |
| Supervision |
Any
group must have at least one teacher present for the entire session.
Adult groups should have a group leader/organiser present. Sessions
will not take place if supervision is not present. |
| Times |
Lengths
of sessions are 50 - 60 mins. I do three sessions in one day,
preferably in the same location so there is no time lost in setting
up and changing rooms.
